La Victoria Prison unfit for new admissions

Santo Domingo.- The Attorney General’s Office announced today that the La Victoria prison, which was affected by a fire last Monday, is currently not in a suitable technical condition to admit new detainees with preventive detention orders, until further notice.

Attorney Mirian Germán sent a communication on March 20 to the President of the Supreme Court of Justice, Luis Henry Molina, requesting alternative arrangements for custodial measures in other correctional facilities.

The communication states, “As you are aware, on March 18, 2024, an incident occurred at the La Victoria CPL that has impacted hundreds of inmates, and the consequences of which are currently being evaluated by the competent authorities. This emergency situation is being promptly addressed by the Attorney General’s Office, through the General Directorate of Penitentiary and Correctional Services.”

It further adds, “Under such circumstances, we kindly inform you that, until further notice, CPL La Victoria is not in a technical condition to accept new admissions. Therefore, we respectfully request that you disseminate this information to the jurisdictions affected by this situation. In case a judge or court imposes a preventive detention measure, we urge that it be executed in another facility.”
